Developing Ponds, Springs, and Water Resources for Flood and Drought Management
Description: Prepare your farm for flood and drought. Learn about siting and building ponds and swales, developing springs, ram and solar water pumps, and integrating such water management practices on your land in a cohesive way. You’ll also talk about how you can work with other landowners in your watershed to manage water during future wet and dry seasons. Developing water resources on farms can moderate flood intensity at a watershed or landscape scale while increasing the resilience of your farm’s water supply. You will walk with Ben Falk (Wholes Systems Design) on his homestead and experimental farm, where he has installed ponds, developed springs, and manages water in an integrated design. You’ll talk about how to locate good sites to construct ponds, key considerations for building them, and how we can increase farm resilience in wet and dry years by thoughtfully designing and developing water resources.
